S.S. Badger: Lake Michigan Carferry
Приєднався 27 кві 2009
The S.S. Badger is the last coal-fired passenger steamship in operation in the United States. She has provided a fun, reliable, and affordable shortcut across beautiful Lake Michigan for more than 60 years and has transported millions of passengers since her re-birth in 1992. In 2016 she received the nation’s highest historic honor when the Department of Interior officially designated the Badger as a National Historic Landmark.
The 410ft. S.S. BADGER can accommodate 600 passengers and 180 vehicles, including; RVs, motorcycles, motor coaches, and commercial trucks during her sailing season. Originally designed primarily to transport railroad cars, this grand ship and the people who serve her have successfully adapted to the changing world since she first entered service in 1953.
From mid-May to mid-October the Badger sails daily between Manitowoc, WI and Ludington, MI. For additional information, call (800) 841-4243 or visit www.ssbadger.com

Oh the small motor today
Very soon the complex engineering on this ship ( old school engineering ) will be beyond the future engineers. Today it's all about electronics and apps.
Damn, those are 2 talented truckers!! These beautiful horses are obviously in great hands!!!
Amazing video
That is the biggest awesome skilled holy shit I have ever seen
bro... HOW AND WHEN DID YOU GET ONBOARD SPARTAN. Dont you like need some permission to get onboard or what?... Coz im confused even tho this video was shot in 2012
I can't believe it still using coal 😮
Where is Barley, the dog???
Great job backing those trucks in!
I sometimes wish they would restore the SS badgers sister ship to operation as well. Would've been amazing.
She has been used as a parts ship for the Badger. A whole bunch of parts that you can’t get anymore would have to be custom made for her to sail again.
While loading that rig on the Badger is quite a feat I can't imagine getting it thru either Ludington or Manitowac. The streets from the dock to the Interstate near Manitowac are narrow with several 90deg. plus turns.
I knew it took a lot of work to sail the beautiful Badger but I had no idea, wow! Great job on the film. We have taken this ship several times including just this month. Thank you captains and crew and all staff, it takes a whole team and everyone does a great job. Thank you & keep up the great work. Bob & Susan
nice!! i love the ss badger
"Kid out there wants you to sign his hat" What a first class guy.
Awwww...beautiful Badger....love riding on the Badger❤️😊
Thank you for the well-detailed video! It's July 2023 and we sail in a few days with our grandkids for the first time! 😊
First video
2:49
I rode the ship with my family in Auguust, 1969; I was only eleven years old; watched alot of television in TV room, ate great food, met all kinds of people and made new friends. We rode to Wisconsin Dells from Ludington, Michigan and later round trip! It's amazing this ship is still in service, memories say I recommend anyone to ride and at sixty-five years of age (2023), I would do it again ,,,proud Michigander! Ship Ahoy!!!
“Windlass room” not windless 😅
Motorcycles would never been driven onboard by anyone else than their owners. They just wouldn't have it like that.

0:05 Captain sir, it seems we've picked up an alien with a head that looks strangely like a camera.....
Muito interessante o vídeo e parabéns a empresa por manter essa preciosidade em atividade
*MATATAN* *RIBIRIN* *("!!".🤔."!!")*
That was remarkable. I Remember hearing about this.
Love My SS Badger. Thank you all who captain and keep her running.
...HARD RIGHT ? Navy Ships only turn to Port or Starboard, I always thought. I mean it's in my DNA that way... lol
Very beautiful
I sail on her all the time. My grandpa used to work on the SS United States when he was young in the late 50s and 60s.
o7
wow, I have to look for my wife because I think that was the time we went on the SS Badger and had a great meal and sandwich... it was a great trip and super nice weather.
Very well done! You have an extraordinary crew! I wish I lived closer. I would love to ride on her. Continued success. Thank you for sharing!
Good to see there’s some very wealthy people do something good with their money besides buying another house that they probably only visit every few years.
Oh no a hunk of wood boat go smash into it 😆
What kind of horns are they using?
Such amazing talent and professionalism demonstrated in a calm manner. Wow!
#78 Thank You for a fine video. Back in June of 1978, I wheeled the Badger as a passenger, from Ludington to Milwaukee's slip. Probably the only non crew member to do so! I knew the Captain very well as we worked together earlier on the Carferry, SS City of Green Bay, I was at the Helm on the 3 Mate's watch. I'm glad the SS Badger was saved for everyone to enjoy!!
What's the ringing all about
When the captain (white hat) arrives in the rear pilot house, who is the other captain looking person (whirt shirt, shoulder badges, black hat) that soon disappears? Would be neat to see the coordination for docking (I know an anchor is temporarily thrown to turn the ship 180 degrees but when are the engines thrown in reverse (and I assume there is a neutral coast period) When the captain is in the rear pilot house for docking, does he use the wheel or is steering strictly done by varying the engines? Heard the engine telegraph bells going off quite a bit.

Got to see her twice in 2016 in all her glory in Michigan in a bay off the Great Lake. Will always treasure that. I grew up listening to stories of old steam ships my papa used to tell from the 40s/50s/60s and it was wonderful to see the last north American one in person
Delightful video,. Thank you.
I would like to see the SS Spartan refurbished and used as a Great Lakes Cruise ship, with Ports going from Ludington, to Charlevoix, Mackinaw Island, Saginaw, Detroit, Clevland, Niagara Falls/Buffalo, Toranto, Sault St Marie, Green Bay, Manitowoc, Milwaukee, Chicago, Holland/Muskegon....that would be an amazing summer cruise.
tall deck hand did a killer giraffe imitation during bingo
Why is there a child on the bridge when the ship is being brought in?
Absolutely fabulous!! Keep up the good work and greetings from UK
I've been on the Badger several times. It's always amazing to watch them turn that big ship around and back her right to that spot.
As a Captain that use to run a 300 ft dinner boat, I appreciated the fact that as I thought of some question a mariner might ask it was promptly answered by the video, both technically and at the passanger level, well done. This really did make me want to come and take a ride on the boat! What is her operational season?
